The national workforce development charity partnered with The Outstanding Society to update the guide ahead of changes being made to Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections.

Outstanding care guide shaped around new CQC inspection framework

Skills for Care have launched an updated edition of their Good and Outstanding Care Guide in line with the CQC's new single assessment frameworkNumbering 300 pages, the comprehensive new guide has been shaped around the new CQC Single Assessment Framework, which was launched in the south of England from 21st November this year. It is due to be rolled out across the rest of the country by March 2024.

The CQC’s new Single Assessment Framework represents the biggest change to health and social care inspections in almost a decade.

The care watchdog will use it to inspect and rate all regulated health and social care providers, as well as system-level organisations.

Skills for Care have co-developed the updated Good and Outstanding Care guide to include practical advice to help care providers excel in their next CQC inspection under the new framework. It draws on Skills for Care’s years of guidance, advice and best practice examples, joining this with The Outstanding Society’s expertise when it comes to delivering the highest standards of care.

The guide is designed for frontline managers and those supporting regulated services to be ready for inspection by the watchdog.

Outstanding care guide walks providers through new quality statements

The Good and Outstanding Care Guide has been shaped around the CQC's new quality statementsThe updated Good and Outstanding Care guide explores the CQC’s 34 new Quality Statements and tangible ways to achieve them. It can be used as a standalone resource or as a companion to the GO Online: Inspection toolkit.

Skills for Care say it will help deepen understanding of the new CQC inspection process. It is available for all Skills for Care Registered Manager Members.

The updated guide covers:

  • How to involve people, your teams and others in preparing for inspection
  • Practical ways to gather evidence and showcase your service meets or exceeds CQC expectations
  • Insight into CQC ratings and what sets different services apart
  • Access to 34 downloadable recommendation checklists shaped around each Quality Statement.

The CEO of Skills for Care, Oonagh Smyth, said the CQC’s new Single Assessment Framework had sparked “a lot of interest” from care providers and managers and that the updated Good and Outstanding Care guide would support them “to ensure they’re continuing to deliver and evidence best practice.”

The Executive Director of The Outstanding Society, Zoe Fry OBE, added:

“The CQC’s Single Assessment Framework will require all regulated providers across health and social care to gather more evidence to show inspectors how you service is meeting the Key Questions and new Quality Statements. In preparing your service for inspection it’s important that you build confidence across your staff team.”
