A Nottingham-based company were fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £4,867 in court costs after one of their workers was seriously injured in a fall from a mezzanine floor. Following the incident, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned that it will continue to prosecute firms who fail to protect employees working at height.

Pontiac Coil Europe Ltd, of Queens Drive Industrial Estate in Nottingham, were held to account on 12th November at Nottingham Magistrates' Court. The firm pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 6(3) and 4(1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005. The court found that the company had not planned their work properly and had neglected to implement adequate safety measures to prevent employees from falling from a height.

The accident, which occurred on 25th June 2008, left employee Norman Leonard Cole, 62, with a fractured skull and shoulder and a number of fractured ribs. Mr Cole was dismantling a mezzanine floor surface at the firm’s premises when he fell 2.4 metres to the ground.

HSE Inspector Stuart Pilkington believes that Mr Cole’s fall was potentially fatal: “Falling from a height continues to be one of the most common causes of fatal injury to workers, accounting for 58 fatalities in 2007/8 in Great Britain. On this occasion Mr Cole sustained a fractured skull as well as other injuries, and was lucky to escape death.”

Hodgins Smith Consulting can now offer online training to raise awareness of working at height in a cost effective way. Jim Redmond, Health & Safety Practicioner at Hodgins Smith Consulting, explains: “Working at height is extremely dangerous and this makes it essential that all employers ensure their employees are aware of the dangers by undertaking adequate Health & Safety training. We offer both a practical course and training via our new E-Learning range, which can help to raise awareness of Working at Height, which can prove useful for employees in situations similar to this.”
