Workforce Development Strategy launch...

Skills for Care have launched a new Workforce Development Strategy to ensure that the 1.6 million-strong adult social care workforce has the required skills to provide top quality care.

The strategy has been developed in conjunction with employers and key partners from within the sector and the Department of Health. It addresses the Government’s new vision and priorities for adult social care.

The main aim of the strategy is to support employers to develop a workforce which is well-equipped to achieve a greater level of personalisation. It also features clear objectives to support workforce commissioning, planning and development.

Individuals working within the adult social care sector will lead the implementation of the strategy, as well as employers, service users, carers and helpers within the wider community.

Care Services Minister Paul Burstow said: “Within social care, the workforce is our most valuable asset and we have much to be proud of, with 1.6 million dedicated workers providing services that transform lives.

“This Workforce Development Strategy will help support employers to develop a workforce that is equipped to achieve more personalised services.

“Recruiting and retaining a high quality workforce that is skilled, flexible and innovative is the essential foundation on which excellent social care rests.”

In addition to the strategy, Skills for Care Chair Professor, David Croisdale-Appleby, announced the formation of a Workforce Development Fund to help support employers to meet the objectives of the strategy. He described it as a ‘clear indication’ of the support pledged by both Skills for Care and the Department of Health to help frontline employers ‘to create a capable, confident and skilled workforce.’

Comprehensive induction training and continued professional development is extremely important for workers in the adult social care sector. They must have the required skills to deliver the best outcomes in all aspects of their roles. First Response Training offer a wide range of care sector training courses from the FRT Common Induction Programme and the core subjects, to general health and safety topics, special focus training and professional development.

Darren Emery, Development Director at First Response, says: “Further development and training opportunities are often key to recruiting and retaining top quality workers and several studies have clearly shown that this is the case in the adult social care sector. Workers appreciate the opportunity to enhance and develop their skills and feel more valued, respected and confident as a result. This has a positive effect on their work, leading to better outcomes for the people who use their services.

"It is fantastic that such focus is being put on workforce development within adult social care, as this is exactly the route they need to follow in order to drive improvement and reform. First Response can help employers develop their workforce as we offer a wide variety of training specially designed for the adult social care sector and we can also work with services to develop bespoke training solutions.”
