The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has revealed that over 7,000 early years practitioners have now obtained Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) as part of their graduate-level programme.

The programme, which is the only government endorsed professional accreditation in the early years sector, is designed to help raise national standards in the early years’ workforce.

The Council first introduced the accreditation in 2006 and, since then, they have trained and accredited 7,316 people. A further 3,126 are currently undergoing training.

In January 2011, the CWDC published the First National Survey of Practitioners with Early Years Professional Status to illustrate the positive difference made by graduate leaders to the early years sector. The study revealed that 80% of early years practitioners felt more confident in their role as a result of graduate level training.

Judith Thompson, Assistant Director for Early Years at CWDC, said: “Everyday, throughout the country, graduate EYPS are working with our under 5s and leading and supporting their colleagues to be the best they can.

“We are constantly inspired by their determination and commitment.”

First Response Training provides a range of childcare training courses which are mapped to the criteria set out by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and are developed in line with Ofsted requirements and CWDC guidelines.

Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response, says: “It is great that a high number of practitioners within the early years’ workforce are seeking a high level of training and accreditation and that this is having a positive impact on their skills and ongoing professional development.

“For these practitioners, training will not stop once they have obtained EYPS. As part of their continued professional development they should undergo further training courses as required by their job role. For them, and for workers who have not obtained EYPS but who wish to develop their skills and meet statutory requirements, we can offer a range of training.

“We offer Health and Safety for Child Carers and Paediatric first aid, both basic and advanced, which are essential courses for all those who work with children and young people. We also offer more specialist training, such as Child Protection Training, Epilepsy Awareness, Manual Handling for Child Carers, Nutrition and Healthy Eating and Autism and Asperger Syndrome Awareness.

“For more information on any of these courses, or to hear more about the flexible services which we offer and your different options for practical, distance, blended and e-learning, please call us today on freephone 0800 310 2300.”
