Public Health Minister Anne Milton has announced the launch of a national recruitment drive to appoint an extra 4,200 health visitors to provide advice and support for families.
The move to revitalize the health visiting profession will benefit thousands of families as it will increase the numbers of health visitors working in the community by nearly 50%. The drive will involve creating 4,200 new positions, implementing an improved training programme and the creation of a new vision and identity for the profession.
Anne Milton explained: “Health visitors play such an important role. They give support and advice to families and can make a huge difference to the lives of children.
“The health visiting profession has been eroded dramatically over the past decade. That’s why we are funding 4,200 new posts and improving training.
“[...] Investing in health visitors is investing in the future health and well-being of our children, families and communities.”
As frontline workers, health visitors are in an ideal position to help prevent illness and injury to children and support their families to give them the best start in life. They can also ensure that wider community support is available for those who need it.
Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response Training, says: “Health visitors have a lot of responsibility; as families have changed and evolved, so has their role and they are now of central importance when it comes to safeguarding children and identifying when referrals onto specialist services are required.
“The government is now focusing on recruiting and retaining workers within the health visiting profession and previous research has clearly demonstrated that a crucial factor in teh successful recruitment and retention of staff is the provision of ongoing training and the opportunity for continual professional development.
“At First Response we provide a wide range of courses aimed at those who work with children and young people. A number of our training courses tackle specialist subjects and contribute to the professional development of childcare workers. These days, families have ever-more complex needs and health visitors are going to need the knowledge and experience to be able to respond to these diverse needs.”
