Tata Steel UK Limited have been fined £30,000 after a potentially fatal blaze at their Scunthorpe Steelworks.
The firm admitted two breaches of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 in relation to the incident, in which one worker suffered minor facial burns. In addition to their hefty fine, Tata have also been ordered to pay a further £1,696 in court costs.
Scunthorpe Magistrate’s Court heard how two Tata employees narrowly escaped much more serious injuries, or even death, after a jet of flames shot out from an overhead pipe on which they were working on 25th February 2009. The two employees were attempting to repair a gas leak in the pipe when the live gas inside ignited, causing the blaze. The court was told that it was fortunate that the two workers had not been completely engulfed by the flames.
A subsequent investigation had found that Tata Steel UK had an inadequate and unsuitable risk assessment in place and had compromised employee safety by neglecting to eliminate the risk associated with coke oven gas.
