Skills for Care reports on the adult ...

Skills for Care have launched their second State of the Adult Social Care Workforce report, which features the latest data from over 17,000 organisations within the sector.

One major finding of the new report is that the adult social care sector continues to grow with an estimated 1.71 million jobs being carried out by 1.6 million paid workers. A gender profile also confirms that the majority of the workforce – around 80% - are women.

The report draws on data from Skills for Care’s National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC) and the Office of National Statistics. It supplies valuable information for employers about vacancy and staff turnover rates as well as highlighting skill shortages and gaps across the sector.

Data taken from Skills for Care’s NMDS-SC reveals that the majority of the adult social care workforce is well trained, with 64% of all senior care workers holding relevant qualifications up to NVQ Level 2 or above. The report suggests that at least 39% have obtained up to Level 3 or above and over 60% of registered care managers are qualified up to Level 4 or above.

As well as examining the current shape of the adult social care workforce, the report also looks ahead to provide hypothetical models of the potential size of the workforce in 2025. The models will be utilised in the debate about how the social care sector will recruit and retain these future workers.

Skills for Care Chair Professor, David Croisdale-Appleby, explains: “The adult social care sector was once famously described as a ‘data desert’ so Skills for Care believes this new report will provide an oasis of information making sure we have reliable data to create a trained and qualified workforce capable of meeting the huge challenges ahead.”

We offer a wide range of health and social care courses which are mapped to National Standards and have links to NVQ Level 2. Operations Director Perry Leeks says: “We provide a whole suite of health and social care courses, including training programmes in the key subjects such as Infection Control, Handling and Administration of Medicines, Moving and Handling of People, Dementia Awareness and Health and Safety for Carers.

“Thorough and regular training is central to delivering good quality care and maintaining high standards. Our training courses are reviewed on a regular basis and we always keep ourselves up to date with changes in legislation. We have curriculum leads in key subject areas to advise and oversee this process. Therefore clients can always be confident that our training courses reflect current policy and essential standards of quality and safety.”
