Skills for Care have launched a practical, easy-to-use guide to support and encourage continuing professional development (CPD) for adult social care workers.

The guide, entitled Keeping Up The Good Work, is designed to help employers of all sizes organise their workers’ CPD. It offers advice about which activities constitute professional development – from job shadowing to formal learning - and how to effectively evaluate CPD sessions.

The ability to recruit and retain good quality care staff is cited as one of the major benefits of CPD and care workers themselves have indicated in past surveys that they value any opportunity to develop their skills.

Keeping Up The Good Work contains 14 short case studies demonstrating different types of CPD in action across the adult social care workforce, many of which come from organisations who have received recognition in the Skills for Care ‘Accolades’ awards. It also includes a two-page guide which employers can hand out to their workers.

The free publication replaces Skills for Care’s 2006 CPD strategy, framework and employer’s guide as well as its more recent 2009 CPD case studies publication but it is designed to be much shorter and easier to use.

Skills for Care CEO, Sharon Allen, explains: “Skills for Care has always believed that learning should be continuous through the career of adult social care workers, so we’ve worked hard with employers to produce this practical guide to CPD to help their worker’s reach their full potential.”

First Response Training provide a large number of training courses for the care sector, as Business Development Director, Darren Emery, explains: “Our extensive course portfolio continues to expand and diversify and we now offer a vast number of specialist training courses, including many courses aimed at the professional development of care workers.
