Personalisation may be the new all-important buzz word within adult social care services, but many providers are unsure as to how far they are meeting the criteria for personalisation and what they could do to perform better in this area.

In order to assist services, the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG) have launched an online assessment tool to enable social care providers to gauge how prepared they are to offer personalised services to users.

The online tool, named Getting Personal, provides practical support for adult social care providers who are working towards personalisation. It consists of a short and simple self-assessment of the provider’s progress by evaluating their performance against a set of key factors.

The idea is that providers can use the self-assessment to reflect on their practice and progress and to monitor performance at board level. Getting Personal, which is available for free on the SCIE website now, can also be utilised as a comparative tool, allowing providers to benchmark their progress against other similar settings.

Lucy Hurst-Brown, VODG Trustee & Chief Executive Brandon Trust, says: “Getting Personal has been developed with organisations working across the whole of the adult social care sector. [...] The VODG is delighted to play a leading role in the promotion of personalisation and the transformation of social care.”

A second stage to the online assessment tool will follow in December 2010. This continuation of Getting Personal will direct care providers towards resources, including training, that will support their specific requirements and aid them in their journey towards personalisation.

Charlotte Potter, Head of Quality and Curriculum at First Response Training, says: “This is a great tool for service providers as it enables them to positively review and reflect on their own practice and to analyse how they are measuring up to the personalisation goal. However, before they can make any progress, providers need to understand what personalisation means and have a good grasp of the person-centred approach to care and the legislation and standards that apply. Training must come first, and then self-assessment.”

Charlotte, who has previously worked as a manager of adult residential care services, developed First Response Training’s 6 hour Person-Centred Care training course. The course teaches delegates the person-centred approach to care practice and the implications for supporting individuals in a person-centred way. It looks at the meaning and importance of person-centred care and person-centred care planning and covers the legislation and standards that govern this approach.

Charlotte continues: “The ‘Transforming Social Care Agenda’, which was published in 2008, contained the vision for the development of a personalised approach. Our training course looks at this agenda and all related aspects of personalisation, such as acknowledging individuality, equality and diversity, promoting independence and choice and any implications for health and safety. It is a comprehensive course.”
