The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) is launching a programme to develop a new generation of graduate leaders for the early years sector.

The New Leaders in Early Years programme was devised in conjunction with Canterbury Christ Church University and was recently given the green light by the government. It is now recruiting graduates who have the potential to become leaders, possess a wealth of knowledge and skills, and show a strong commitment to achieving the best for children.

The post-graduate programme will begin in November and Canterbury Christ Church University, based in Kent, is aiming to recruit 30 high calibre graduates by then. They will then look to recruit a further 30 graduates in autumn 2011. Candidates must have at least a 2.1 honours degree to be considered.

Students will receive intensive mentoring and support throughout the two-year programme and, once they have graduated, a strong emphasis will be placed on continual progression within the early years sector. The programme aims to offer a wide range of personal development and learning opportunities to give students the best skills and experience possible. The programme will be evaluated by the CWDC.

Thom Crabbe, National Manager for Early Years at CWDC, said: “High quality early years provision requires talented, committed practitioners at all levels working with our youngest children. We hope the programme will introduce new entrants who will go on to become first class leaders in the sector in the future.

“[...] New Leaders in Early Years demonstrates a strong commitment by the government to support front line practitioners working with young children and to raise the status of the early years sector. If it proves to be successful, this programme has the potential to be transformative and have a powerful effect on the status of the early years workforce as a whole.”

First Response Training offer a wide range of professional development courses for people working in the early years sector. Operations Director, Perry Leeks, explains: “First Response is committed to the development of all workers in the care sector and we think it is especially important that those who work with vulnerable individuals – such as children – undergo regular training and dedicate time to continual personal development.

“This sounds like an exciting initiative and a great opportunity for graduates, but it is important that they recognise that achieving their masters qualification is not the end of their training. There are a number of statutory training courses, as well as more specialist subjects, that it is important that they undertake, and they should also undergo regular refresher training.”

First Response offers training courses including Paediatric First Aid, both basic and advanced, Health and Safety for Child Carers, Manual Handling for Child Carers, Child Protection, Epilepsy Awareness and Autism and Asperger Awareness.
