New Moving & Handling Train the Train...
Effective moving and handling training is vital for the safety of both care workers and care home residents and if staff are not properly trained the chance of serious accidents and injuries occurring is greatly increased.
The Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care recently issued a warning across the sector over safe moving and handling practices and the need for effective and regular training. They recommended that manual handling training should be delivered to care home workers on a systematic basis and that refresher training should always be available.
One way of ensuring that proper moving and handling training is readily available for the induction of new recruits or to update existing workers is to enable key members of your staff to become trainers in this area themselves.
Care home staff can complete a 4-day Moving and Handling Train the Trainer course which is ideal for people who have the ability to be able to train others. It introduces candidates to the information and techniques required to deliver effective moving and handling training.
The course features a considerable amount of practical work which contributes towards the assessment at the end of the course. Delegates will find out about the learning process, effective teaching methods, the training environment, methods of assessment and presentation among other points.
By the time they have completed the training your delegate will be competent in carrying out manual handling assessments and can train others with a delegated responsibility for moving and handling people. They will also be able to explain to other carers the role of risk assessment in moving and handling exercises and, finally, can deliver a complete moving and handling training session to a group of workers.
There are spaces available on an upcoming course taking place at Munro Rehab Centre in Clydebank, Glasgow. This course begins on 7th June 2010 and is 4 days long, finishing on 10th June 2010. This course is externally accredited by a national awarding body and is tailored specifically for care sector staff. It costs £557 + VAT and this includes certification.
Operations Director Perry Leeks says: “Care providers have a responsibility to ensure that their staff are properly trained for all of the services that they have to deliver, and this is perhaps most important when it comes to moving and handling tasks. If, due to a lack of training, these tasks are not carried out correctly the consequence can be serious injury to the service user or staff member.
“Having an onsite trainer is an excellent way to ensure that your staff have all been properly trained in this area and can be easily refreshed in the correct techniques. The fact that your trainer has an independently accredited qualification will help add weight to their knowledge and the training provided at your setting.”
