New framework for supporting people w...

Skills for Care has worked in partnership with Skills for Health and the Department of Health to design the new Common Core Principles for supporting people with dementia.

The new framework has been launched to help develop a workforce that is able to respond confidently to an individual with dementia and support them to lead the life they want. It has been designed to be flexible and easily adapted to the specific needs of any workforce.

The Common Core Principles form the basis for training and professional development among support workers, teams and in wider corporate training programmes. They have been developed in line with National Occupational Standards and link to the Qualifications and Credit Framework.

Sharon Allen, CEO of Skills for Care, says: “With projections of up to 1.7 million people with dementia by 2051, then it is critical we develop a confident adult social care workforce who have the capability and skills to offer high quality support to those people and their families.

“The partnership approach to developing these easy to use principles was a clear recognition of the need to integrate frontline support services for people with dementia.”

An estimated 750,000 people in the UK are currently living with dementia. It is hoped that the new framework will help health and social care workers to develop joint ways of working with these individuals within their communities.

Skills for Care have also teamed up with the Dementia Action Alliance to support another recently launched programme – ‘a call to action on the use of anti-psychotic drugs for people with dementia’. The programme aims to get everyone working in health and social care to contribute to a reduction in the use of anti-psychotic medication for individuals with dementia, as the inappropriate prescribing of this treatment can significantly impair their quality of life.

First Response Training can offer an informative course which raises awareness of the causes and effects of dementia. The 3-hour Dementia Awareness training course enables workers in the care sector to understand dementia and help support persons living with dementia to lead fulfilling, active lives.

Course content includes the signs and symptoms of dementia, daily care and medication, communication, promoting independence and the rights of the individual. It has links with the Skills for Care Common Induction Standards and the Qualifications and Credit Framework. First Response can offer external accreditation for this course and a more in-depth 6-hour version is also available.

Anthony Griffin, a Training Officer at First Response, says: “By promoting independence and dignity, we provide helpful and interesting explanations for delegates. As the course draws to a close we suggest several support organisations who can be contacted for further advice on caring for an individual with Dementia, including the Alzheimer’s Society for Dementia Care and Research.”
