IOSH call to keep staff healthy and s...

John Holden, the president of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), has suggested that firms resolve to make 2010 the safest and healthiest year yet for their workers.

Last year there were 180 deaths, over 130,000 injuries and 1.2 million cases of ill-health caused by work and IOSH, the world’s largest health and safety professional body, is urging businesses to work towards reducing these figures in 2010.

John stated that work should be good for your health – “provided you’re not under excessive pressure or in a working environment where risks with your safety are routinely taken” – and says that if companies make a few simple changes they could help minimise the number of deaths in British workplaces as well as significantly reducing the number of serious injuries and cases of ill-health caused or aggravated by work.

IOSH is appealing to businesses to promote a good safety culture at work and to create opportunities for workers to follow a healthy lifestyle. John suggests that firms can achieve this with measures such as allowing more flexible working time, encouraging walking or cycling to work, promoting staff discounts at local leisure centres and encouraging employees to set up or attend support groups and sports clubs. He is also calling for firms to clamp down on workplace bullying.

Employers could also encourage employees with their own personal resolutions to improve their individual health and fitness. Following the guidelines set out by John and the health and safety body could help to reduce stress levels and promote good communication within an organisation.

John concluded his message by saying: “Keeping staff fit and healthy is good business. You gain because your workers will be off much less with ill-health, they’ll be more productive and feel valued. […] Even during the tough economic times we’re going through, investing in health and safety initiatives is still a smart thing to do if you want to maintain a profitable business.”

Darren Emery, Group Development Manager, says: “We believe that creating a safe working environment is central to all good business practice and that ensuring your staff have the opportunities and knowledge to work in the safest way possible will make them feel appreciated and respected.”
