HSE launch noise awareness campaign
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have launched a campaign entitled ‘Buy Quiet’ in an attempt to reduce noise-related ill health in the workplace.
It is reported that 170,000 people across the UK suffer from deafness, tinnitus or other hearing conditions as a result of exposure to excessive noise in the workplace. In order to combat this, the HSE is working with manufacturers to encourage them to make quieter machinery.
The HSE is also targeting suppliers, employers, unions, insurers and consultants in order to ensure that the new quieter products are bought and that the risk is reduced all round.
The campaign was kickstarted with a workshop for businesses and organisations in which they discussed their ideas and were provided with information on the legal requirements associated with noise emissions. Employers were also taught how to identify and manage the risks of exposure to excessive noise at work.
HSE's Sarah Haynes, HM Inspector of Health and Safety (Noise & Vibration) said: "Noise-related ill health can have a devastating impact on workers and their families, and Buy Quiet is about exploring ideas and sharing information about what can be done to reduce the risks.”
We offer an interactive, online Noise Awareness training course. E-learning Account Manager, Pete Stock, says: “Your hearing is priceless – it helps you to stay safe whether at home or at work. With the launch of the HSE’s new initiative, there has never been a better time to acquaint yourself or your employees with the relevant legislation regarding noise emissions and the risks involved in working with noise. Our course provides guidance for both employers and employees and teaches learners about noise reduction and maintenance.”
