A high school in Essex has been fined £6,500 and ordered to pay an additional £2,243.85 in costs after a caretaker fell almost two metres to the ground from an unguarded work platform.
Shenfield High School, based in Brentwood, pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws at Chelmsford Magistrate’s Court in relation to the incident, which occurred on 28th July last year.
Caretaker David Springett, 54, was carrying out recladding work on the outside of the school kitchen with a colleague when he lost his footing and plunged a distance of 1.9 metres. He broke his arm and two ribs in the fall.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) decided to prosecute the school when an investigation revealed that they had not implemented sufficient safety measures to prevent falls when working at height.
Unsafe working at height is the cause of thousands of workplace accidents every year. Anyone undertaking any work at height, or employing anyone to do so, should be aware of the principles of safe working at height and the importance of conducting a risk assessment prior to any such activity. First Response Training can offer a special focus training course that teaches delegates exactly that.
Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response, says: “Working at height is a high risk activity; fatalities occur if the tasks are not properly controlled. Our training course will educate delegates to follow safe systems of work and protect themselves from harm. They will also develop an understanding of the Working at Height Regulations 2005.”
The First Response Training course covers content including legislation and responsibilities, planning, hazard identification, risk factors and risk assessment, human factors, personal safety, ladder safety, accident prevention and reporting and emergency action.
Perry continues: “We are able to offer a wide range of special focus safety training courses, such as Asbestos Awareness, The CDM Regulations (2007), Abrasive Wheels and Forklift Truck Training, and we are constantly working to evolve and develop our course portfolio, so please call us to find out more about specialist training courses tailored for your industry.”
