Guide launched to tackle ageism in em...
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have formed a partnership with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to launch a new guide to help employers address age-related issues in the workplace.
The guide, entitled ‘Managing Age’, supports ACAS guidance on how to deal with staff in the absence of a statutory retirement age. It provides employers with advice about the best way to manage an increasingly diverse workforce and how to get the most out of their staff.
The new handbook features advice on all employment issues, including pay, benefits, pensions, appraisals, recruitment, selection and flexible retirement.
Dianah Worman, Diversity Advisor at CIPD, says: “Our research has shown that many employers already recognise the valuable contribution made by older workers. The challenge now is to move away from the outdated mindset of some employers who may feel that older workers are past their sell-by date.
Sarah Veale, Head of Equality and Employment Rights for the TUC, added: “While most employers have already moved on from retiring staff without consultation, some do need to refresh their employment practices and this guidance provides all the information that they need.”
First Response Training, one of the leading training providers in the UK, champions equality and diversity in the workplace and they offer Equality and Diversity training for organisations.
Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response, says: “Within our own organisation we have a very diverse workforce and have robust policies in place with regards equal opportunities and promoting diversity. Our policies cover recruitment, selection, pay, benefits, appraisals and reviews and all aspects of employment. It is something that we are passionate about, which supports our whole company vision, and we are pleased to be able to help other companies instil a similar approach to equality and diversity within their own settings.”
All First Response trainers receive Equality and Diversity training and the whole team must complete an NCFE-accredited Level 2 Equality and Diversity distance learning course. The training provider even has a nominated Diversity Champion, Nicolette Glashan, who provides talks, coaching and updates in regards to equality and diversity to the staff team.
Nicolette says: “We represent a diverse workforce and we have a very diverse client base. The UK workforce in general is a very diverse one and it is important that everyone is educated in regards to equality and diversity so that equal opportunities can be promoted throughout. Ageism is often the overlooked prejudice, but it is as unjust and damaging as any other prejudice so it’s fantastic that guides like this one are being introduced to push this issue to the fore and bring about a positive change. No one should be discriminated against for any reason, and we are proud to provide training which supports and reinforces this belief.”
