Funding for the children’s workforc...

The Chief Executive of the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC), Jane Haywood, has responded to the government’s decision to withdraw funding for workforce development activity through the CWDC.

She said: “We are naturally very disappointed with this decision. We have achieved much to be proud of over the last five years and our legacy will be a long one.

“We have demonstrated that by focusing on the needs of children and families and listening to employers, it is possible to create a better qualified and supported workforce empowered to improve young people’s lives.”

The decision, announced last month, strips the CWDC of its NDPB status and brings ongoing key functions into the Department. Jane Haywood explained that the Council would work with government officials and partner organisations to transfer work across, so that “we can continue to make a difference to children, young people and families.”

The CWDC will remain as a sector skills body and will continue to support the children and young people’s workforce. Jane Haywood spoke about how “top quality services are delivered by top quality staff” and she finished by saying that: “In these challenging times, more than ever, employers need support to develop their workforce.”

First Response Training offers a wide variety of training courses aimed at the professional development of the children and young person’s workforce. The courses are mapped to national standards and meet Ofsted requirements.

Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response Training, says: “We believe in continued professional development for workers in all sectors, but especially for those who work with vulnerable people, including vulnerable children, young people and their families.

“We are living in difficult times but it is important that financial constraints do not translate into poor quality care for children or a halt in improvement to services. Councils and other organisations within the child care sector must continue to train their staff to a high standard – but we can help them make sure that they do this without blowing the budget.”
