Thousands of frontline NHS staff set ...

Andrew Lansley, the Secretary of State for Health, has announced that thousands of frontline NHS staff will be taking the reins of the services they deliver in a bid to transform patient care and improve health outcomes.

The NHS ‘Right to Request’ scheme, which gives public sector workers the chance to become their own bosses, is entering its third wave with thirty-two more proposals to set up social enterprises.

The new proposals coincide with an additional £4.4million being made available through the Department of Health’s Social Enterprise Investment Fund. The funds will be used to support the successful schemes and encourage further social enterprises.

The schemes allow clinical staff to make their own decisions about the local services they deliver, enabling them to become more responsive to the needs of their patients.

A total of 61 innovative proposals from frontline NHS staff have been submitted since the ‘Right to Request’ scheme was introduced in 2008. It is estimated that this relates to almost 25,000 workers and £900 million worth of services being transferred into the social enterprise sector.

Services within the latest wave of proposals include primary care access for the vulnerable and homeless, sexual health services and support for bereaved children and families.

Andrew Lansley said: “I am encouraged by the enthusiasm with which the NHS frontline staff have embraced the ‘Right to Request’ scheme. This represents a major milestone in the delivery of the White Paper commitment to create the largest and most vibrant social enterprise sector in the world. We want to empower millions of public sector workers to become their own boss and help them to deliver better services.

First Response Training offers a wide variety of training courses for the health and social care sector and works with many major public sector organisations.

Business Development Director, Darren Emery, explains: “With a dedicated Head of Quality and Curriculum, an Associate Director of Quality and Curriculum and a Curriculum Consultant all on board – unique positions within the training sector - we are able to tailor training courses to meet the specific needs of an organisation and its service users. We are therefore ideally suited to working with social enterprises, which are, by their nature, focused on providing services that are exactly suited to the specific needs of their patients.

“We can also provide training on care management and risk assessment in care, which may be particularly useful for frontline staff who have recently become their own bosses and must now ensure that they are meeting health and safety standards as they direct their services.”
