FIA announces new requirements for fi...

The Fire Industry Association (FIA) have announced a new code of practice for the commissioning and general maintenance of fire blankets.

The new guidance is designed for the person responsible for fire safety in any type of premises. It outlines the criteria for the regular monthly inspection of fire blankets and the maintenance of fire blankets. It details the requirement for an annual service to be carried out by an experienced service provider.

The new code of practice is for both commercial and domestic buildings and it gives guidance on the recommended life of a fire blanket, and when a blanket should be identified as unserviceable. If inspection reveals that a fire blanket is no longer serviceable, the guidance states that a permanent replacement should be put into place as soon as possible.

The code of practice is intended as a way to uphold best practice for the installation, maintenance and use of fire blankets by a trained service provider or the person responsible for fire safety. It acts as general guidance and the FIA suggest that more detailed advice should be sought in specific circumstances. The full code is available to view on the FIA website, www.fia.uk.com.

As part of fire safety regulations, the person responsible for fire safety in a building must take all reasonable steps to reduce the risk of fire in that building. It is also their responsibility to consider how they would contain a fire and ensure people could evacuate safely in the event that one did break out. They must also record and keep fire risk assessments, current policies and procedures for fire safety and staff training records.

First Response Training can offer a full-day Fire Marshal training course, designed for members of staff nominated as a responsible person for fire safety, and a Fire Safety for Managers and Supervisors course, in addition to a more basic 3-hour Statutory Fire Training course.

Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response, explains: “Statutory Fire training is useful for all staff members and provides them with the training and information required by law which will equip them to cope in an emergency fire situation. It covers an overview of fire risk assessment and fire prevention methods.

“The Fire Marshal course is for those people nominated as fire marshals / wardens in their workplace. It provides the knowledge and understanding of fire safety risks and how to prevent fire. It also covers risk assessment, emergency plan and evacuation, and testing, training and practising procedures. A practical training element on the correct use of a fire extinguisher can be included on both this and the Statutory Fire Training course, if required.

“The Fire Safety for Managers and Supervisors course provides those in a senior role with an awareness of the legal obligations for the effective management of fire safety within the workplace. It includes information about liaising with your local fire authority, managing a fire marshal scheme in your company, and maintenance and testing.”

“These direct provision courses and our e-learning option, Fire Safety, can all help to ensure that your workforce have the knowledge necessary to prevent a fire occurring.”
