The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has issued a refresh of the common core of skills and knowledge required for anyone who works with children and young people.

The common core was established in 2005 to enable professionals and volunteers working with children and young people to work together effectively for the benefit of those in their care.

The guidelines have now been reviewed following consultation with professionals, volunteers, children, parents and carers and in collaboration with the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

The update, carried out in support of the 2020 Children and Young People’s Workforce Strategy, sees a strengthening of the common core of knowledge and skills, with particular focus on the areas of online safeguarding and early intervention and prevention. The review questioned whether the six key areas of skills and knowledge continued to be relevant, whether they reflected current policy and practice, and how widely used the guidelines were.

General feedback revealed that the common core is supported and valued across the children and young people’s workforce and therefore the six core areas remain broadly the same for 2010, but with a number of areas strengthened. These areas include online safeguarding, integrated working, early intervention and prevention and disability and disadvantage.

Deirdre Quill, Director of Integrated Workforce at CWDC, said: “This refreshed common core includes a strengthening of areas where workforce needs and policy is changing: it now highlights the need for an awareness of the risks to children and young people from online activities and the importance of online safeguarding. It has also been updated to reflect emerging thinking and practice around the skills and knowledge required to support early intervention and prevention, and the skills and knowledge required to address issues of disability and disadvantage.

"The consultation has also highlighted that while many local areas use the common core effectively in induction, training, job descriptions and workforce development strategies, use is not always consistent across local areas or sectors of the workforce. To ensure the common core is used by everyone who works with children, young people and families - and in all sectors - CWDC is currently developing plans to move towards universal usage.”

We offer a number of training courses to help contribute to the professional development of people working with children. Operations Director, Perry Leeks, says: “A main area of review for the CWDC has been intervention and prevention, which relates to the larger issue of child protection, so it is important for child carers to have an increased awareness on this subject.

"Our 3-hour Child Protection Training course will provide an understanding of the responsibilities for safeguarding children and how to work safely as a team with the protection of young people in mind. Child Protection is also available as an interactive E-learning course, which can be completed in just 35 minutes.”
