CWDC launches Return to Social Work p...

The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has joined forces with the Department for Education (DfE) and London South Bank University to develop the Return to Social Work programme.

The programme is designed to enable former social workers to return to the profession, by offering them a package of support and training in current social work theory and practice. It involves a 20-day course to provide advice and practical support in finding a position within children and families’ services. Candidates will receive financial support, including travel and childcare assistance. Courses begin in March 2011.

Those opting to participate in the Return to Social Work scheme must have a recognised social work qualification and must hold GSCC registered social work status or be in the process of re-registering. Anyone who has previously completed a CWDC-funded Return to Social Work course cannot apply.

Keith Brumfitt, Director of Children's Trusts at CWDC, said: “This is a great opportunity for those qualified social workers who left the profession and are working elsewhere to get back in and start to make a difference again.

“The training and support on offer is excellent and will enable social workers to get back up to speed on current social work theory and practice they will need to re-enter the profession.”

Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response Training, says: “It is great to see that the CWDC, in conjunction with other organisations, is actively trying to source more support for young people and their families through initiatives such as the Return to Social Work programme. This could help many areas where services are struggling.

“However, once former social workers have updated themselves on current social work theory and practice they must also ensure that they undergo further training in areas such as health and safety and professional development.

“At First Response, we offer a wide range of training for the children and young people’s workforce, including special focus training courses. We are also continually looking to the future and hoping to find ways in which we can expand our provision to further meet the needs of the sector.”
