The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has launched a campaign to help safeguard children through safer recruitment for the children and young person’s workforce.

The CWDC is stressing the fact that any organisation involved in working with, or providing services for, children and young people has a duty to ensure that they are protected from harm and to promote the welfare of children by recruiting their workforce in a safe manner.

As part of their campaign, the Council has even developed free Safer Recruitment Online Training to teach managers, and anyone else responsible for recruiting, about safe recruitment processes and how to make the right decisions during the recruitment process. It covers the current arrangements for vetting and checking.

Deirdre Quill, Director of Early Intervention and Prevention at CWDC, explains: “Organisations working with children, young people and their families have a responsibility to ensure that they operate safer recruitment procedures and that everyone who works with them, in whatever capacity, is suitable.

“It's important that recruiters in the private, public and voluntary sector across the children's workforce follow good practice and help protect children from people who are unsuitable for such positions of trust, by taking the safer recruitment online training.”

Once safely recruited, people working within the children and young person’s workforce also need to ensure that they can protect children from being harmed by others. First Response Training can offer Child Protection courses and a number of other training programmes for the paediatric sector to help build on the Safer Recruitment Training and also ensure that new recruits have all the knowledge and skills needed to provide a safe, good quality service to children.

Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response, explains: “First Response firmly believes in safer recruiting, and we have a robust recruitment process which stipulates that all trainers must undergo an enhanced CRB check prior to commencing their role. We think that it is great that the CWDC is offering people training about how to recruit safely, but we hope that people within the childcare sector remember that training does not begin and end with the recruitment process.

“Once managers have safely recruited team members, following best practice and using the correct arrangements for vetting and checking, they must ensure that their workforce undergoes regular training and follows a policy of continued professional development. We can deliver a wide range of professional development courses for members of the children and young person’s workforce, as well as the mandatory modules, such as Paediatric First Aid training.
