The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has developed improved guidance for foster carers in partnership with the Fostering Network.

They are working to ensure that fostering service providers receive enhanced support by making clear guidance and new training resources readily accessible. The aim is to improve standards of care for vulnerable children and young people.

The CWDC hope that the new support materials will cut back on bureaucracy, provide increased consistency across services and improve support for carers and their supervisors. The material has been specifically designed to offer a more practical approach to delivery and includes real-life examples, as per feedback from the fostering workforce. The material is flexible enough to be adapted to the individual needs of different organisations and their employees.

All foster carers must comply with national minimum standards of good practice and their supervisors provide a major support role. The new guidance includes supporting material for supervisors to help equip them and the foster carers under their supervision with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide the very best care for vulnerable children.

Ann Harrison, National Manager for CWDC said: “This new guidance is just what supervising social workers have been asking us for. Most importantly, it addresses the uncertainty some have had when supporting foster carers to complete the Training, Support and Development Standards.

“We found that there was a tendency to over-complicate the evidence needed to complete the workbooks, so we have now simplified the process and highlighted just how straightforward they can be when embedded in day-to-day work.”

First Response Training works with foster care services and local authority children’s services across the UK. They expanding their training provision for the childcare sector in 2011 and already have a large number of childcare training courses, which are mapped to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Darren Emery, Business Development Director at First Response, says: “We are committed to providing a high quality service which meets the needs of our clients and their delegates. We work with a number of local authorities up and down the country, from Staffordshire County Council to Warrington Borough Council, and often develop bespoke training programmes specifically for them.”
