Cross party support called for change...

Politicians are reportedly gearing up for cross-party talks about how to reform the health and social care system in England.

The inadequate care given to elderly and disabled people in the UK has been described as an issue which ‘transcends party politics’ and the aim is that a reform plan for social care will be presented by the Spring. Similar talks failed in 2010, but this time politicians are hoping to achieve a cross-party consensus on the best way forward.

The talks are being held this month after leading figures from charities such as Carers UK and Age UK, faith-based groups and senior figures in the NHS and local government sent an open letter to the Prime Minister urging him to act. The letter, which includes a total of 72 signatories, has been published in the Daily Telegraph.

There will be a series of meetings held by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and Liberal Democrat Health Minister Paul Burstow, with the first taking place within the next few weeks. The government have refused to comment on the upcoming talks, but Mr Burstow has said that reforming social care is an “urgent priority”.

The letter to the PM described the issue of how to support the increasing number of elderly people requiring care as an “unavoidable challenge” and went on to explain: “It is currently a challenge which we are failing to meet – resulting in terrible examples of abuse and neglect in parts of the care system.

“This comes at huge cost to the dignity and independence of older and disabled people, but also to our society, family life and the economy.”

It also referenced research by Age UK which indicates that of the 2 million people who currently have care needs, around 800,000 were not receiving any support because local authorities have been forced to restrict access to services. Many now feel that it is in the hands of national politicians to act.

Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response, says: “We work collaboratively with the sectors we deliver training to and consult them about what they require to meet the many challenges they face. The problem for many care services is that they are being increasingly stretched on an ever diminishing budget.

"Training is vital to ensure that elderly and disabled people are receiving the standard of care that they deserve, which respects their dignity and independence, but it must be affordable. First Response continues to offer organisations the highest quality training possible at an affordable price, and special offers like this provide further help to the sector.”
