CQC halts admissions to faltering Lei...

Leicestershire County Council, working closely with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), has halted admissions to a care home after a series of safety concerns were highlighted.

The owners of Saffron House in Barwell, Leicestershire, have been told that they must take immediate action to ensure the safety of their residents after a CQC inspection revealed that they were failing to meet 12 essential standards of quality and safety.

The CQC decided to investigate after Leicestershire County Council raised concerns about the home’s procedures for safeguarding. The regulator published a report following the inspection which also identified concerns relating to the standard of management, systems for assessing and monitoring the service and support to staff, among others.

Downing Barwell Ltd, the care provider in charge of Saffron House, has now been given 28 days to demonstrate how it will address all safety concerns. Care providers are legally required to ensure that they are meeting the essential standards of quality and safety. While they acknowledged that there was no immediate risk to current residents, the Council has made the decision to stop any new admissions to the home until it has achieved compliance.

Andrea Gordon, Regional Director of CQC in the Midlands, said: “It is clear that the management failures we found showed that people who live at Saffron House have not been receiving the quality of care, support and treatment which they must have. We will be taking further action to protect their interests.”

First Response Training offers a wide range of health and social care training, suitable for all settings and registration types. They can support a care home’s training programme, from guiding managers and carers through the Common Induction Standards to further progressing carers’ skills through special focus training and professional development courses.

CQC Inspectors reported that the lack of management intervention, monitoring and action was placing the welfare, health and safety of service users at Saffron House at risk. First Response offers a Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults training course, as a 3 hour awareness or more in depth 6 hour version.

Julie Crowther, Associate Director of Quality and Curriculum at First Response, explains: “Safeguarding is a key issue in adult health and social care and it should form part of the core training that all carers complete. It is a vital training course for anyone working with vulnerable adults.”

Problems with assessment, supervision and support were also identified at Saffron House. First Response can offer a 6-hour Supervision Skills course and a 6-hour Assessment, Interview and Planning Skills course. Julie says: “Managers and supervisors in care need to have the knowledge and skills to provide effective supervision of staff members and to be able to carry out assessment effectively and record and evaluate the process. This is important for improving performance in care.”
