CQC announce dignity and nutrition in...

50 NHS Hospitals and 500 care homes will come under scrutiny next year from the care watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) have announced that a further round of inspections into dignity and nutrition will take place at hundreds of care settings next year, following a review this year.

The original dignity and nutrition review took place between March and June 2011, with CQC inspectors paying unannounced visits to 100 NHS Hospitals. They found that under half were meeting both standards while around 20% were non-compliant and required urgent improvements.

The care regulator has now said that a further 50 NHS hospitals will be inspected early next year and that this will be a combination of those that raised concerns as well as a new sample of other sites. Added to the dignity and nutrition inspection list will be 500 care homes from across the country. A national report is planned for next autumn.

The targeted review will focus on whether older people are treated with respect and given food and drink which meets their dietary needs. In the original review, inspectors were concerned by an apparent lack of respect for patient privacy, patients being spoken to in a dismissive manner, patients not receiving the help they needed to eat and patients being interrupted during meals and therefore being forced to leave their food unfinished.

One of the key ways in which care settings can ensure that they are meeting the required standards in dignity and nutrition is through proper staff training. First Response can offer training in Dignity and Care and in Nutrition and Healthy Eating, to ensure that care workers understand the importance of both of these issues and have the knowledge and skills to deliver the appropriate type of care.

Developed in line with CQC requirements and the Skills for Care Common Induction Standards, these courses also link to Diploma in Health and Social Care (Level 2).
