Concerns over a crisis of quality in ...

Over 3,000 care homes in England are without a registered manager, according to recent figures released by Action on Elder Abuse.

The charity has warned that these figures “demonstrate a frightening picture of the state of residential care in England” and that the sector has widespread problems.

Gary Fitzgerald, Chief Executive at Action on Elder Abuse, says: “The registered manager holds a crucial role in establishing and maintaining standards of quality. To have so many homes with requirements of this type is appalling.”

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has issued requirements to the 3,011 care homes to have a registered manager in place. Of these homes, 482 have applications to register managers currently pending with the regulator.

A spokesperson for the CQC said: “The 3,011 figure may be down to the need for care home providers to improve staff training, development and recruitment. It’s important to remember however that having a registered manager is a legal requirement as part of the new system of registration.”

The figures were released to Action on Elder Abuse by the CQC under the Freedom of Information Act.

First Response Training offer a wide and diverse range of training courses for the adult social care sector, including all mandatory training courses required as part of the Skills for Care Common Induction Standards, core training subjects such as Dementia Awareness and Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, special focus training and professional development courses.

Julie Crowther, Associate Director of Quality and Curriculum for First Response, says: “The development of our course portfolio is driven by legislative change, national drivers and best practice updates, but also by individual client requirements. We understand that these are difficult times for the care sector and we have a wealth of experience in working with organisations to help them get the best out of their training programme, using a variety of flexible solutions. We also have a number of courses specially designed for care managers.

“Staff training is key to recruiting and retaining top quality care workers, so its value should never be underestimated by the sector. All eyes are on adult social care providers at the moment, especially in light of many high profile cases of serious failings, so quality assurance and proper training is just as vital as ever.”
