CIEH warns food businesses not to cut...

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has warned food businesses that cutting back on food safety and hygiene training could signal the ‘death knell’ for their company.

A recent survey conducted by the CIEH revealed that many food businesses are cutting back on food safety and hygiene training. The survey, which was sent out to 5,000 food safety trainers and training centres, showed that 50% of respondents felt that there had been a decrease in demand for food safety training with a massive 70% of these citing ‘cost cutting’ as the main reason for this.

In response to the survey David Kidney, CIEH Head of Policy, warned that this decrease in food safety training could put public health at risk and that it was, “potentially triggering a food poisoning time bomb.”

The CIEH is the UK’s leading provider of accredited food safety training courses and over 10,000 trainers and training centres across the UK are registered with them. First Response Training are a registered centre with the CIEH and offer their accredited Level 2 in Food Safety in Catering training course, which is for all those who handle, store, prepare, and serve food and beverages. CIEH qualifications, such as this one, are Ofqual accredited and internationally recognised.

Darren Emery, Business Development Director at First Response Training, says: “Effective food hygiene control is critical to prevent the contamination of food and the possible outbreak of food poisoning. The Level 2 Food Safety course teaches delegates about the relevant legislation, food safety hazards, correct cleaning, food storage and handling procedures as well as things like pest control.

“At First Response we believe that health and safety is about more than just legal compliance but is about creating a safe working environment where people feel valued and protected from harm. We feel that it is very worrying that, when it comes to making spending cuts, it is something as vital as food safety training which is being targeted.”

David Kidney of the CIEH, seems to agree: “The economic downturn has meant many businesses have had to rein in spending, which is understandable, but quality training needs to be seen as an investment which protects your staff, your business and your company’s reputation. A food poisoning outbreak can be the death knell for a food business and can have a myriad of consequences from reputational damage to business failure.”

Times may be tough financially, but by implementing legally required procedures and training, you can negate the possibility of compensation claims and criminal prosecution.
