A recent report published by Ofsted has revealed that high-quality childcare can make a significant difference to the lives of children in need.
The Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills, more commonly known as Ofsted, conducted the small-scale survey in order to identify the factors that led to positive outcomes for vulnerable children in childcare. It found that a focus on continuous professional development and the utilisation of skilled staff meant that children in need received valuable, tailor-made support.
Ofsted inspectors visited 20 day-care settings and five childminders across four local authorities that had previously been assessed as good or outstanding and met around 140 children judged as being in need. The survey showed that these first-rate settings identified the additional needs of vulnerable children early on and were efficient in coordinating the necessary support.
Continuing professional development was highlighted as one of the key factors that enabled practitioners and providers to ensure that children in need received support that matched their individual needs, were able to participate fully, and progressed well personally.
Practitioners working within these top quality settings were shown to take full advantage of both basic and advanced child protection training courses. Inspectors also noted that staff made use of additional opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills by attending other relevant training courses.
In order to improve the support given to all children in need, Ofsted are now urging all children’s trusts to learn from this study. They suggest that trusts should identify and promote opportunities for childcare practitioners and providers to share advice about good practice and gain further training and knowledge.
Head of Curriculum, Mike Mulcahy, comments: “It’s no surprise that regular training and continuous work to keep yourself up to date and skilled in your profession will make you a better carer and benefit those you work with. It is, however, a really positive thing that Ofsted are highlighting this in their report.
“All children deserve the best quality care, but this is even more important for children who are in need. It’s great to hear that dedicated childcare practitioners are taking advantage of training opportunities and that vulnerable children are reaping the benefits.”
We offer a range of training courses aimed at child carers, including Paediatric First Aid, both basic and advanced, Child Protection, Epilepsy Awareness and Autism and Asperger’s Awareness. We also offer courses such as Manual Handling for Child Carers, Health and Safety for Child Carers and Nutrition and Healthy Eating.
