Carpentry firm fined for lack of safe...

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have prosecuted a South London carpentry firm after an investigation revealed that they repeatedly put the health and safety of their workers at risk.

Pentcroft Ltd, a carpentry and joinery company based in Garratt Lane, Wimbledon, pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 at the City of London Magistrates’ Court. They were fined £15,000 and ordered to pay a further £3,203.80 to cover prosecution costs.

The HSE decided to prosecute after an investigation revealed that the company allowed workers to use dangerous woodworking machinery without any formal training or information about safe working practices. They also failed to provide adequate supervision for workers.

The court heard how one employee, Simon Lear, cut off part of his right-hand index finger in an accident involving a circular saw in March 2010. When an HSE Inspector visited the workshop just one month later, they witnessed another employee using another dangerous device without any safety measure in place.

Commenting on the case, HSE Inspector Clare Hawkes said: “It is the employer’s job to ensure that workers have sufficient information and training to work safely and that they are properly supervised. It is also the employer’s responsibility to enforce safety rules, not the employees’.”

Pete Stock, E-learning and Business Account Manager at First Response, says: “No matter what industry sector you are in, it is really important to have a properly trained workforce and that all of your employees are aware of safe systems of work.

“In many cases, practical, direct provision training is required to ensure that the necessary level of competence is obtained. However, in some cases e-learning can be a great solution and a cost-effective and convenient alternative to practical training. We have a wide range of health and safety e-learning courses, which are perfect for staff inductions or competency updates.

“We can even offer a blended learning package, providing a mixture of practical training and e-learning to ensure that your workforce has the knowledge and skills required to work as safely as possible.”
