British Safety Council campaign aims ...

The British Safety Council have launched a new campaign, entitled Speak Up, Stay Safe, in order to raise awareness about health and safety among young people.

The campaign aims to support young people in the workplace and encourage them to take responsibility for their own health and safety. The campaign website, www.speakupstaysafe.com, offers a number of specialist tips and a wealth of advice for young people and their parents, teachers and employers.

Statistics show that every 40 minutes in the UK a young person is seriously injured in the workplace. In 2009 alone, 3,200 young people aged between 16 and 19 were seriously injured at work and in the past decade 66 young workers have been killed in the workplace.

Julie Nerney, Chief Executive at the British Safety Council, says: “We think this position is wholly unacceptable. By highlighting to young people that they need to be aware of their environment and speak up if they feel unsafe we hope to significantly reduce this number."

These shocking statistics demonstrate just how important the Speak Up, Stay Safe campaign really is, for both young workers and their families. The initiative aims to reduce accidents by supporting young people to speak out if they feel that they are working in a dangerous environment and are at risk of injury or even death.

We offer a number of health and safety training courses, both for employers and employees, which provide information on how to stay safe at work and explain the relevant legislation and what workers and businesses need to do to comply with it.

These courses range from a 3 hour Essentials of Health and Safety training course, which provides delegates with a basic understanding of the subject, to a 4-day IOSH Managing Safely training course, which is aimed at managers and supervisors and leads to a formal qualification. To discuss the options in more depth, please call us today and speak to one of our sales team.

In addition to the direct provision courses, we also offer a suite of online health and safety training programmes. Business Development Manager, Pete Stock, who oversees our online training, explains: “E-learning is a great way to train your staff in a convenient and cost-effective manner. The courses are great for induction and refresher training and we have a range of health and safety titles.

“Depending on your role within a company, you can choose from courses such as Health and Safety Introduction, Risk Assessment, Health and Safety for Managers, Office Safety and Lone Working. If you have a young worker you can arrange for them to complete any one of these courses to ensure that they are aware of all of the dangers that they can face in the workplace and their own responsibilities under law.

“Another relevant course might be Health and Safety for Students as this teaches students how to correctly and safely identify hazards, as well as covering alcohol and drug awareness and their personal safety.”
