Birmingham Children’s Hospital face...

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has recently published a report commending the improvements made by Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust but they have also warned that further challenges lay ahead.

An assessment review back in March 2009 found that the hospital was struggling to meet rising demands and that there were delays in treatment, below standard care, and a high number of children being sent on to other services. A second review was conducted in November 2009 to assess the progress made by the trust.

The subsequent report has now been published and reveals significant improvements in quality across many areas of specialist care. The regulator notes that the trust has fully satisfied half of the 12 recommendations made in early 2009 and that they have made progress in the remaining six.

Services have reportedly become more accessible and steps have been made to create and improve management systems. The hospital has also purchased more equipment and has recruited and trained additional staff members. However, despite the obvious progress, the CQC said that further improvements were still required and that the trust will continue to be monitored.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital now faces challenges in managing long-term demand for services and working with all local NHS bodies to provide the best possible specialist care for children. The specialty areas covered by the review include renal transplant, liver transplant, craniofacial surgery, neurosurgery, interventional radiology and cardiac services.

Andrea Gordon, West Midlands regional director for CQC, said: “We will continue to monitor the trust through our tough new registration system, which requires the NHS to meet essential standards of quality and safety. So far, we have been satisfied with the progress at Birmingham Children's Hospital and I want to be clear that we have not identified any breaches of the standards. This is about managing long-term demand for services and ensuring that all local NHS bodies work together to provide the best possible specialist care for children.”

We can offer a number of courses designed to help develop the skills of those who work in a supportive role with children and young people and to improve the quality of services for children in the health and social care sectors.

Perry Leeks, Operations Director, says: “Our courses are mapped to national standards, meet Ofsted requirements and detail the relevant legislation surrounding each subject. We can offer a comprehensive Advanced Paediatric First Aid course which is designed for those who work closely with children and a Child Protection course to help workers understand their responsibilities for safeguarding children.

"In addition to these courses we can also provide a health and safety course tailored specifically for child carers. Whatever the nature of your role, we can help you improve your knowledge and therefore provide a higher quality of care.”
