ADCS President calls for strong leade...

The President of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS), Marion Davis, has urged leaders in the sector to show “strong and moral leadership” in order to prevent vulnerable children from suffering the effects of the public spending cuts.

Davis, who was speaking at the National Children and Adult Services Conference in Manchester, said that directors of children’s services must be prepared to be bold in their approach as they defend early intervention and prevention services and seek sufficient funding to meet the needs of the children’s social care sector.

She said: “Not only are children’s services departments, like all local authority services, experiencing the sharpest budget cuts in living memory, but Directors of Children’s Services are also awaiting the outcome of a number of reviews that could fundamentally change the way some of our core work is delivered on the frontline.

“Making the most of these changes will require strong leadership and some very courageous conversations with colleagues in local government to get the best deal for children and young people.”

She also explained that a sector-led approach to improving children’s services would, “help to mitigate the possibility that less government prescription would result in a postcode lottery” in the quality of services for children.

Perry Leeks, Managing Director at First Response Training, says: “First Response can work with you to help reduce your costs. We work with several local authorities and children’s social care departments throughout the UK to support them to maximise their training and development, always working to budget constraints.

“We offer a range of innovative delivery methods, including practical training, e-learning and distance workbooks and blended learning approaches, helping organisations to reduce their costs without cutting their training and reducing the quality of care they provide to vulnerable children, young people and their families.

“We are living in difficult times but it is important that financial constraints do not translate into poor quality care for children or a halt in improvement to services. Councils and other organisations within the child care sector must continue to train their staff to a high standard – but we can help them make sure that they do this without blowing the budget.”
