£40 million grant puts spotlight on ...

Care Services Minister Phil Hope has announced that a £40 million grant from the Department of Health will be used to improve care for patients who are nearing the end of their lives.

The funding has been provided as part of the Department of Health’s End of Life Care Strategy, which was launched in July 2008, and it will benefit 123 hospices across the UK. Projects that form part of the End of Life Care Strategy commenced in April of this year and are expected to be completed by 31st March 2011.

Patients will receive better quality care, more dignity and more privacy as a result of the grant. The money will also be used to enhance and equip hospice environments and to support the work hospices do in conjunction with care homes and to provide care for people in their own homes.

Among the improvements made to hospices and patient’s homes could be the installation of specialist bathing apparatus, developing gardens to enable patients to spend more time outside, and large-scale refurbishments.

Care Services Minister Phil Hope said: “This grant will help hospices care for people's physical, emotional and social needs. It will support families and carers by providing welcoming spaces that promote dignity and respect.

“We know that improving the caring environment is something that is very important to people. Today I am delighted to be able to make that a reality.”

We can offer an End-of-Life Care training course for people who work in the care sector. Mike Mulcahy, Head of Quality & Curriculum, explains: “Whether you work in a hospice, residential care home, or for a domiciliary care agency, it is important that you understand and appreciate the wide-ranging needs of a person who is nearing the end of their life, and that you are familiar with the government’s End-of-Life Care Strategy.

“Our course aims to introduce candidates to the end of life care principle, which will enable them to understand the delivery of palliative care to assist a person to live well until the end of their life. The course provides delegates with a knowledge of the Gold Standards Framework and the Liverpool Care Pathway. In addition, we place a lot of emphasis on dignity, empathy and communication, which are all integral to providing high quality care.”
